Parts of speech as markers of the convergence of written and spoken Czech (based on the material of journalistic texts, 1990-2019)

Institution: Assoc. Prof. PhD., Czech Language Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Prague

Email: o.blaha@ujc.cas.cz

Keywords: Czech; parts of speech; language change; written language; spoken language; journalistic texts.

Abstract

The article deals with the dynamics of parts-of-speech system in Czech, as it appears in texts from four Czech daily newspapers from 1990-2019. The changes in the frequency of certain parts of speech in Czech well document the process of convergence of the written journalistic language with the spoken language, because parts-of-speech systems (especially in inflectional languages) reflect very well the differences between the spoken and written modes of language existence. The author notes, among other things, that in written journalistic texts from the last three decades, some parts-of-speech that are frequent in spoken language, especially pronouns and verbs, are increasing in frequency. In written journalistic texts, on the other hand, the frequency of some parts of speech that are abundantly used in older written journalistic texts, such as nouns and adjectives, is declining.

LITERATURE

Lidija ČOLEVIĆ

„Ja se stalno pitam šta će za jedan vek ostati od mog dela?” Ivo Andrić / ”I constantly ask myself what will be left of my work in one century?” Ivo Andrić

Institution: Lect. PhD., Department of Russian and Slavic Philology, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Bucharest

Email: lidija.colevic@lls.unibuc.ro

Keywords: Ivo Andrić; jubilee; Balkan literature; reception; romanian reality.

Abstract

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the passing of Ivo Andrić (1892-1975), the most widely translated Serbian writer in Romania, this paper seeks to address the question posed in the title: I constantly ask myself what will be left of my work in one century? To contribute to this reflection, we provide an appendix detailing of Romanian translators and translated works from 1951 to 2025. Marking this commemorative year, eighty years after the publication of Andrić's seminal novels in the study of Balkan literature, Na Drini ćuprija (The Bridge on the Drina), Travnička hronika (Bosnian Story), and Gospođica ( The Woman from Sarajevo ) in 1945, this study highlights the enduring presence of his literary works in Romania. Andrić's oeuvre, shaped by the historical and cultural landscapes of Byzantium, the Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary, emerges from the folkloric traditions of the South Slavs and the Balkans—a region often perceived as a “double periphery”, positioned between Western Europe and Central Europe. Despite these historical and geopolitical complexities, his writing continues to captivate Romanian readers. His work continues to find resonance, with Romanian translations serving as a crucial means of sustaining his literary influence. The literary and cultural dialogue between Romania and Serbia, as facilitated through Andrić's work, reflects societies shaped by ideological and historical forces that extend beyond the borders of his native Bosnia and Herzegovina. Themes of national conflict, alienation, and duality—central to his narratives—remain as pertinent today as they were in his time, underscoring the universality and lasting relevance of his literary contributions.

Nostalgia patriei pierdute în „Istoria unei călătorii” de Gaito Gazdanov / The Nostalgia of the Lost Homeland in ”The Story of a Journey” by Gaito Gazdanov

Institution: Lect. PhD., Department of Russian and Slavic Philology, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Bucharest

Email: alagaina12@gmail.com

Keywords: Gaito Gazdanov; nostalgia; exile; homeland; memory; alienation.

Abstract

The article analyzes the theme of nostalgia for the lost homeland in novel The Story of a Journey by Gaito Gazdanov based on the analysis of the original text. The main character Volodya Rogachev has deep reflections on life and memories from his homeland. His experiences are universally valid for most Russian emigrants who have lost their roots and are trying to integrate into a new society, to find a meaning and we could even say - their lost identity. The characters recall the domestic space as a space of stability completely different from the tumultuous experience of exile. Gazdanov also highlights through his work the fact that man is fragile, and the revolution has a devastating impact on life. The article also explores how nostalgia for one's homeland and cultural alienation are expressed in the original text through the characters' thoughts and feelings. The writer tells us through his characters about the isolation of the exiles, as well as about their cultural uprooting. Another character, Alexandr Alexandrovici understands that in exile the connection with his native country is impossible, a dream that deepens the inner conflict of the character. The article contains fragments of the original text and the translation of these key paragraphs for understanding the theme of nostalgia for the lost homeland.

Institution: PhD., Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, Slovak Republic

Keywords: onomastics; unofficial (living) personal names; nicknames; western Slovakia.

Abstract

The paper focuses on individual characteristics in the classes of married men, married women and single persons in Moravany nad Váhom in the district of Piešťany in western Slovakia. Individual characteristics according to physical and mental characteristics are used less and may be more often kept secret from the researcher because they are a "sensitive matter". Individual characteristics by origin and residence is related to social and demographic characteristics such as the resident's immigration from another municipality, another nationality or origin of the resident, and furthermore to the nature of the terrain and the ruggedness of the municipality under study. The paper uses the example of unofficial (living) personal names to show how the one-part naming system used to evolve towards the two-part naming system. It can be seen in the individual characteristics to which other functional members were added.
