Jacek BIELAWA

On the Road to Nowhere. Andrzej Stasiuk's Work in Light of Emil Cioran's Apophaticism

Institution: PhD. , University of Silezia, Poland

Email: jacek.bielawa@us.edu.pl

Keywords: apophaticism; subjectivity; alethurgy; spiritual exercises; Andrzej Stasiuk; Emil Cioran

Abstract

The article attempts to interpret Andrzej Stasiuk's prose in the context of Emil Cioran's apophaticism. Stasiuk seems to share Cioran's gnostic conviction about the defectiveness of human nature. As a consequence of breaking his ties with nature, man is an alienated, suffering and “fallen into time” creature. In line with the apophatic tradition, Cioran sets his own goals: to become nobody, to resign from all aspirations, and to reach an absolute of nothingness. Intending to liberate the “I” from the illusions of subjectivity, Stasiuk follows Cioran's via negativa in a literal way, i.e., he travels across Central Europe's hinterlands – areas of an indistinct identity. Contrary to the radically sceptical Cioran, for whom God is only a phantasmal subject of revenge, Stasiuk reveals a vague hope of experiencing an epiphany on his “road to Babadag”, i.e., to nowhere. Cioran's and Stasiuk's prose is interpreted as textual traces of the authors' existential experience and as media of their self-alethurgy (in Foucault's meaning). The common feature of both authors' styles, which reflects the discontinuity of their negative paths, is the poetics of fragmentation, the incoherence of discourse or nonlinear narrative structure. In Stasiuk's case, discontinuity of thought reflects the route of his travels and vice versa.

Eliade în creația poetică a lui Adam Zagajewski / Eliade in the Poetic Creation of Adam Zagajewski

Institution: Prof. Habil. PhD., Silesian University of Katowice, Poland

Email: joanna.dembinska-pawelec@us.edu.pl

Keywords: Adam Zagajewski, Mircea Eliade, Emil Cioran, poem, Mircea Eliade's Diary, interpretation

Abstract

The sketch presents an interpretation of Adam Zagajewski's poem Eliade from the collection Canvas (Paris 1990). The Polish poet is also the translator of Eliade's diaries, which were published under the title Religion, Literature and Communism. An Emigrant's Diary (London 1990). The interpretation reveals the relationship between the poem and the diary and focuses on the figure of the Romanian religious studies scholar. The author of the sketch shows that Zagajewski distances himself from Eliade's views, he reveals the famous professor's attitude to the extermination of Jews. The Polish poet discusses with the Romanian scholar about human life and transcendence, Time and History. Zagajewski also recalls Cioran's sketch on Eliade and follows his ambivalent thoughts. In the poetic epic, written after the death of the famous religious scholar, there is a tension between respect, recognition and anathema.

Anomalii temporale la Milorad Pavić (pe baza romanului „Partea lăuntrică a vântului sau roman despre Hero și Leandru”) / Temporal Anomalies in Milorad Pavić's The Inner Side of the Wind

Institution: Assoc. Prof. Habil. PhD., Department of Slavic Studies, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Bucharest

Email: camelia.dinu@lls.unibuc.ro

Keywords: narrative temporality; narrative time; analepsis and prolepsis; Milorad Pavić; postmodernist poetics; postmodern narrative

Abstract

In the narrative fiction of the Serbian writer Milorad Pavić, the theme of time plays a crucial role in constructing postmodernist discourse. The present study will take into account the work of literary critics Mark Currie and Ursula Heise on the topic of time and then examine the ways in which temporal relationships fashion the fictional discourse in Pavić's The Inner Side of the Wind: Or, the Novel of Hero and Leander (1991). Our investigation will consider the variety of temporal strategies used in the novel such as: alternating chronology with temporal discontinuities; occasional lapses of explicit temporal indications; temporal fragmentation; the presence of flashbacks; prolepsis, and retrospectives. We will discuss this impressive variety of temporal strategies in the context of postmodernist poetics.

Anna Karenina – între abisul social și cel personal / Anna Karenina - Between the Social and the Personal Abyss

Institution: PhD., Cluj-Napoca Technical University, North Baia-Mare University Center

Email: bianca.koposciuc@yahoo.com

Keywords: suicide; society; women's condition; Anna Karenina; eroticism; motherhood

Abstract

The present research focuses on the analysis of a cluster of factors (psychological, social, religious) that contributed to the suicide of Anna Karenina, a monumental female figure in universal literature, trapped in a mundane marriage from which she ultimately seeks to escape. In her pursuit of inner fulfillment, Karenina chooses eroticism at the expense of motherhood, embarking on an extramarital relationship that culminates in her suicide. Banished from good society and isolated from the outside world, the woman constructs her entire existence around the man for whom she abandoned her family and whom she obsessively desires. Alongside the portrayal of her obsessive struggles, the pre-suicidal journey of the heroine provides valuable insights into the condition, status, and role of women in nineteenth-century Russian society, essentially serving as an exploration of the prevailing mentality of the time. Anna Karenina's suicide emerges as a consequence of her inability to reconcile the values imposed by conservative Russian society with her own desires. Love and the patriarchal community invariably become the coordinates that lead to the heroine's self-destruction in Tolstoy's narrative, propelling her towards the ultimate act.

Problematica timpului în creația lui Evgheni Vodolazkin / Representations of Time in the Works of Eugene Vodolazkin

Institution: Lecturer PhD., Department of Slavic Studies, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Bucharest

Email: florentina.marin@lls.unibuc.ro

Keywords: memory; time; timelessness; history; Vodolazkin; mystification

Abstract

The following article is a study of time and memory in the novels of Eugene Vodolazkin. Known for his vast knowledge in the field of old Russian literature, the writer brings forth from the darkness of time evocative images of Russian life in the novel Laurus. Set in medieval Russia and infused with Russian Orthodox elements, the novel presents the life of the hero, the endeavours on his way to redemption. The multiple hypostases of time are revealed in the four books which make up the novel, each revealing a different stage of the hero's spiritual evolution. The writer's approach to memory and its influence on history is presented in The Aviator, a novel which focuses on the idea of individual rather than historical time. Frequent temporal parallels and the fragmented temporal line that characterize the memory activity of the hero oppose the linear time of the novel. Through this opposition Vodolazkin reveals the impossibility of objectively rendering or preserving historical and personal events. Thus, the research focuses on explaining the different representations of time and the significance of memory for personal and collective history.

„Enciclopedia morților” și „Oglinda necunoscutului” de Danilo Kiš: două metaficțiuni alegorice / The Encyclopedia of the Dead and The Mirror of the Unknown by Danilo Kiš: Two Allegorical Metafictions

Institution: Lecturer PhD., Department of Slavic Studies, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, University of Bucharest

Email: gabriel-andrei.stan@lls.unibuc.ro

Keywords: metafiction; Danilo Kiš; postmodernism; Serbian literature, reality; fiction

Abstract

This paper analyses Danilo Kiš's short stories "The Encyclopedia of the Dead" and "The Mirror of the Unknown" as allegorical metafictions. Our paper starts from the poetics of postmodernism presented by Brian McHale in his study, "Postmodernist Fiction", and the description of metafiction undertaken by the British scholar Patricia Waugh in her work "Metafiction: The Theory and Practice of Self-conscious Fiction". The demonstration is based on an analysis of both the problematics and (especially) the poetics of the two literary texts. In other words, we will try to show that there is a convergence between the main themes and motifs that the stories address and the set of artistic procedures that allows the two texts to be interpreted as allegorical metafictions that are indebted to postmodernist poetics.

Institution: PhD., University of Bucharest

Email: alinarozcosma@gmail.com

Keywords: critical discourse analysis; Volodymyr Zelensky; Vladimir Putin; power; war

Abstract

The current study aims to explore the narrative construction of national identity in Vladimir Putin's and Volodymiyr Zelensky's public discourses. I selected two speeches, one of V. Putin (2014) given to both chambers of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, announcing the annexation of Crimea, and a discourse in the form of a videoconference held by V. Zelensky (2022). The selected discourses have Crimea as main topic, and are analyzed by adopting R. Wodak's framework of critical discourse analysis (CDA), T.A. van Dijk's political approach, and N. Fairclough's model of representation of social events. The analysis focuses on the choices of the two speakers in terms of the embedded linguistic features and relevant structures of power, as well as of the historical events they refer to.
